Negative prior aquatic experiences (NPAEs) are unfortunately common among young children and can have an adverse impact on their ability to acquire aquatic competencies and prevent drowning [27]. Unfortunately, little research has been conducted into the effects of NPAE on enrolment, learning or maintenance in learn-to-swim instruction.
This study sought to understand the impact of negative prior aquatic experiences (NPAEs) on learn-to-swim achievement using data from an Australian primary school program. It was discovered that 4% of enrolment records reported a NPAE at enrollment, with children reporting one more NPAE than those without reporting it achieving lower average levels in their program than those without NPAEs.
Males, children with medical conditions and those attending public schools were significantly more likely to report a NPAE. This suggests that children may be more vulnerable from an early age and that a variety of factors could be at play here.
Parents/caregivers and swim instructors should collaborate to enhance supervision and training to promote the development of learn-to-swim skills. Longitudinal studies would also be beneficial in exploring how prior aquatic experiences influence a child’s water safety abilities as they grow older.
Baby Swimming Lessons
There’s no better way to bond with your little one than through swimming. And with a variety of baby swimming lessons available, your kid will become confident and secure in the water.
British Swim School boasts three Philadelphia locations — Richboro, Bensalem and Northeast Philly — offering 10 skill level tiers for small swimmers from infant Tadpole classes to competition-ready Barracudas. Plus they provide water acclimation classes as well as survival swim lessons for children with special needs.
These beginner-level lessons teach babies and toddlers how to back-float, stay under the water, and push off walls with their hands in a positive and developmentally appropriate environment. In addition to lifesaving skills instruction, parents and children get to play games, sing songs, and engage in storytelling that encourages participation throughout the Swimming lessons Cranbourne.
This indoor facility offers both group and private lessons with class sizes ranging from two to four kids. There are also parent-and-baby pool time sessions as well as preschool beginner classes for kids aged five to nine.
These lessons are led by instructors certified in the Aqua-Tots curriculum, which has become the go-to worldwide for teaching children how to be safe around water. Each instructor has 40+ hours of classroom and in-water training to guarantee you get the best lesson experience.
They provide a free assessment to determine your child’s level and place them into the class that best fits their abilities and interests. Once you’ve received your results, you can enroll them into the appropriate classes and watch your little swimmer blossom!

Adult Swimming Lessons
At Swim Academy of Philadelphia, we provide adult swimming lessons to learners of all levels – from beginner to advanced. Each level follows a logical progression that helps you hone your water safety and swimming techniques within an encouraging learning atmosphere.
At our baby swimming school, children between the ages of six months and three years learn the fundamentals of swimming and water safety in a fun, secure atmosphere. This class helps build their confidence for parentless participation in the pool through games, songs and stories.
For children ages two and a half to five, our “Guppy” group provides instruction on floating on their backs, floating in the shallow end of the pool, rolling onto their stomachs, practicing submersion, front crawling, and jumping into the water. Our instructors give these children invaluable skills that could save their lives should they ever fall in.
Our instructor to student ratio is 1:10. This allows the teacher to provide personalized attention for each child and guarantee they feel at ease throughout their experience.
As students mature, they are introduced to freestyle and backstroke swimming as well as teaching them how to jump in the pool, tread water, retrieve sunken toys, and other skills designed to increase their comfort level in the water.
The program also incorporates a lesson on how to utilize the side of the pool in case of emergency, providing them with an invaluable lesson that will serve them throughout their lifetime.
If you have an intense fear of the water, our instructors will work with you to help alleviate those worries and encourage you to push past any hesitations and get in even if it feels uncomfortable.

To guarantee your child receives the most out of their lessons, we utilize a water safety assessment tool to determine which level is appropriate for them. From there, we can tailor our Swimming classes Cranbourne according to each individual’s individual requirements.
This assessment will identify their learning objectives and help create a learning path that will provide them with the necessary skills and assurance to become safe swimmers. It also offers you an opportunity to discuss any issues or worries with the instructor.

It is essential to exercise extreme caution when near water. Drowning can happen quickly and unexpectedly, so make sure all tubs, buckets, containers and large water bowls are emptied immediately after each use. Furthermore, make sure all children who go in the water ask you permission before entering it – never take chances!
